Now: Episode 3 "Is My Very Nature That of the Devil"
20th Century Lousie and Lestat are sitting on a bench on a late evening shooting the shit. Louis is reading a book and Lestat a newspaper in which he shares a tidbit that piqued his interest. It was the history of their town square they're currently in. I just love their interaction in this scene especially when Louis gives a backhanded comment to muddy the dialogue but Lestat is like...hmm idk about wat u sed, I'm halfway through this article.
I guess the point he was getting to was to wonder if vampires have a larger purpose on this earth other than feeding off the humans. Lestat has a very lax approach which doesn't seem to satisify him. He wants to dig deeper to inquire if they should be more picky with what they consume, for the betterment of humanity. Lestat is open ears, I guess. Louis poses the possibility of only preying on the bad, criminal peeps using their telepathy and maybe not kill talented folk ahem LIKE THE OPERA DUDE FROM LAST EPISODE!!
Lestat don't curr. He does bring up an interesting point to mention that every person on this earth is capable of being a douche despite whatever talents they possess. Fair enough. All around, I really do like this scene.
Now both are walking where Louis challenges to read through random folk's mind to zero in on the baddies. They eventually find one and Lestat uses his vampy super stealmode and drags a thief into the alley. Shocked, Louis quickly follows into the alley where Lestat basically has this dude on a silver platter for him. He only did what he asked of him, afterall. He did power down a bad dude that met his criteria.
However, Louis already wants to prove his initial point. Despite him craving that human blood, he instead grabs a black cat that unfortunately crossed his path and bite into the feline instead, much to Lestat's chagrin. Oh, his face!
Both are now at a dinner and a show. A young woman is singing while these 2 are sitting at a table front and center. Louis immediately tries to address Lestat's disappointment in him but Lestat is an intellectual. He knows what his end be at! He saw right through his "kill criminals only" was BS, boi is just having an identity crisis. That's all.
It takes time to truly come to terms with being a vampire.
As the singer, Antoinette Brown, introduces herself after the song finishes, Louis breaks his silence and dead ass confesses that he doesn't want to kill humans anymore. Lestat interprets this as him purposely repressing his killer instinct. Lestat mocks him and says he is going to struggle oh and I fears for the feline population.
This triggers him to heckle a fellow pianist who he claims lost his passion for music. The guy is like "OHHH YEAHHH???? Let's see YOU play, then?"
Of course, he accepts the challenge and plays a dainty cute song on the piano. Pianist is talking into the microphone to make sure all the audience can hear how much he suuuucks. The heckled has now become the heckler and the audience is eating that shit up. Lestat switches now to a more uptempo variation which seems to win over the crowd and the pianist alike.
Louis is now talking to Daniel Molly saying that Lestat eventually admitted that there was nothing ever wrong with the pianist. In fact, he had inside knowledge that the pianist was going to GTFO out of New Orleans so he used this as an excuse to piss the dude off and out of town. Louis himself confesses that the uptempo song Lestatt played that night would later be eerily similar to "Wolverine Blues"
Daniel is like "UH WHAT?! Lestat wrote "Wolverine Blues"?! He pulls up a video on his laptop to have him listen in which he practically confirms.
This doesn't sit right with Daniel Molloy so he is quick to call out some contradictions in his story. Still on his laptop (they are no longer at the dinner table, obviously) he pulls up his original 1973 interview in which he refers to Lestat as a crummy teacher....THEN replays the 2022 clip where he refers to him being his "coal fire" in that cold winter year. So uh, riddle me that, LOUIS?! He continues to play more examples where his 1973 snippets he talks ill will and almost hatred towards Lestat yet he talks so impeccably white knight-y in his 2022 version so...WTF. Daniel even takes it a step further and poses the suggestion that he sounds like a victim of an abused victim.
Louis takes such reluctance to call himself an abused because he know he simply was not. He also pulls the same treatment of his own and picks up Daniel's book and reads aloud a discrepancy in his book to make it a point that this is more nuanced and genuine interview compared to 1973.
Boom. Realizing this muthafucka is right on the money, he shows him being on the same page by dropping the 1973 audio cassette tapes in the trash followed by deleting the corresponding MP3 files in the e-trash. He for realz. Not for fake.
Now, let's get back to the interview.
Lestat is next romancing Antoinette at the piano. In the coming days, Lestat filled in for Jelly (the pianist) after he dipped out of town. Things are now starting to change. Little by little. Lestat no longer fed in front of him and left him to his own devices as he is now pledging his no human feed. Louis now feeds on rats and shit. Not literal shit but you know what I mean. This also came at some consequences for his new lifestyle. He admits that his sex drive lowered a bit, and his energy in general has wained.
Drunken Antoinette drops the bomb that Lestat and Louis are the hot topic of gossip of the Azaelea about them being in a same sex relationship. Lestat does damage control that ends up banging her brains out to settle the gossip. Louis excuses himself to give them some play time.
After some unknown time has passed, Louis sees Lestat already outside (must've used his vampy powers) and they both share a smoke. He honestly expected Lestat to kill her but alas, he did not.
In so little words, Louis shares his jealously over him and Antoinette which this leads this conversation as a segue to open their relationship on who they want to rub shoulders with. Looks like it is a mutual decision and they both share a passionate kiss.
Scene is now switch as Louis is describing to Daniel that around this time was when American troops had a batch drop in New Orleans before setting off to France. There is this one man in uniform, he's black and he has trouble finding a place to welcome people of his color. Every where he looks there's "No Coloreds Allowed" signs on majorrity of those businesses.
Then he reaches The Azalea.
Louis says that also during this time, Ordinance 4118 was signed and in simplified terms: segregation of the colored prostitutes. The dilemma here was that some of the men who were responsible for drawing back his girls were some his top dollar clients. He was able to bypass this Ordinance by giving those prostitutes micro ownership to the Azalea.
This was simultateously discussed at the poker table with 4 other businessmen. Mr. Fenwick (the jolly dude who got in trouble for attempted unconsensual anal in the 1st episode) ain't so jolly about his loophole. Mr. Fenwick immediately follows this up with an updated ordinance to block his shit. Either way, Louis holds his one but it is clear these men are out for his blood.
This gets interrupted when Louis gets informed that there is someone requesting his presence. It's an old acquaintence, Jonah. The uniformed fellow.
Both happily share greetings and he shares a table with him to catch up. Jonah shares that he visited Grace this past morning getting a birthday party together for her twin girls. Louis looks taken aback by this as he was excluded from festivities but he tries his best to not show his disappointment.
While they are chatting outside, Louis glances up and sees none other than Lestat making out with Antoinette, making eye contact with one another. He asks how much Jonah will be in town and so he takes this as an opportunity to show him his car.
By that, they take a joy ride in the car out in the woods. They both take a stroll in the woods and as expected, they inevitably get flirty as they both share attraction towards one enough. Things escalate when they start to kiss and makeout with each other. They undress each other and Jonah goes down on Louis. When things are getting heated, his fangs start to fang out, so he ends up biting his own wrist to satisfy his bloodlust.
After their little tryst, he returns home to a try not to be unsettled Lestat. Knowing exactly what he is thinking, he is the first to bring it up how he was not the one to pursue Jonah and he was the one that found him. Lestat in the mean time acts like a jealous girlfriend with the short answers but you can clearly read between the lines he is jelly as hell.
He tries to switch the subject and ask about Antoinette but Lestat implies that she is a bit high maintenance and doesn't see him having any further encounters with her again. Lestat asks to have a little date night tomorrow but Louis says that it might be a good idea for him to visit his sissy and the rest of the fam.
"Fine."
Louis goes to lock up for the night when he can't help but notice Lestat's boots are covered in...mud.
Quick snippet of Louis and Daniel taking some drinks and said that he eventually did visit Jonah again when he was much older...
The next night Louis comes to visit Grace and the twin girls who shriek and run off inside. His mother comes storming out in the not so happy to see him at all and furious that he missed the party by literal hours. She starts yelling at him that he hasn't shown his mug around there in 6 freaking months!! But the more calm he ties to appear the more angry she gets. Grace's husband comes out to see what she be hootin' and hollering about. He honestly doesn't seem like a bad guy honestly but Louis is being aggressive so he is forced to hold down the fort to respond to it with aggressive of his own.
The more they both try to prevent him from entering, sends him to end up triggering him into an explosive rage and ends up getting the door open!! Breaking nearby furniture and scaring the shit out of Grace and her daughters. Mother is now calmly snarking that he's the devil and stuff.
He tries to talk to Grace but this is the first time (that we've seen) she yells at her brother to GTFO. So he finally takes that cue and leaves.
Louis comes back home to see Lestat having a drunken party with nothing but soldiers. He is soooo not in the mood for this shit so he tells Lestat to get these drunken dude out of here the second he realizes the power at the Azalea got shut down. Reeling for the paper closure...ooh that is just the cherry on top. Lestat then uses his vampy powers to manipulate all the soldiers to leave the house like freaking robots. He be looking like Professor X lolz.
As soon as they leave, but still drunk, Louis is not amused. He clearly pieces together that Lestat did this out of spite for his tryst with Jonah. Lestat then tauntingly gives a direct quote Louis told Jonah in the woods which sealed the deal.
"I knew it! You were there!"
He just can't wrap his head about this after he admitted to being jealous because afterall, he was fucking around with Antoinette. But hey, that's different because he doesn't have any true romantic feelings for her.
Lestat then BURSTS with anger when he said "I HEARD YOUR HEARTS DANCING!" Ohh that even hurt me hearing that. Sam Reid is such an amazing actor for his portrayal of Lestat. Holy fuck. Tom Cruise, who? I don't know her.
The same night, Louis along with Lestat confronts Mr. Fenwick about how the fuck to go from here. Mr. Fenwick snarkily says that he was warned, afterall. Not his fault he ignored it. Mr. Fenwick and Mr Anderson are just giving shit eating smirks. Shrug their shoulders and say there is really nothing they can do. It's obvious they are trying to run Louis out of town due to their connections.
While Mr. Fenwick is claiming that he half assedly tried to persuade the council, Louis reads his mind which is basically racist shit while trying to act civil outwardly.
Louis asks Mr. Anderson deadass if he willingly sold him the Azalea know this would be the ultimate outcome. He refuses to answer but really, his face says it all.
Mr. Fenwick continues his fake ass facade and even asks to buy the Azalea from him...for way below what Louis initially paid for.
Back at home Lestat doesn't share the same discontent at this major setback but Louis is out for blood...figurtively speaking. So what he ends up doing is displaying a new sign:
This obviously did not go over well as then sent in the police to enforce the cease and desist and...yeah. Corrupt police meanwhile Fenwick is across the street talking his shit saying this is further to exhibit the thuggish behavior and it will not be tolerated because WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!!
I love this next line because Daniel comments in his own way of "fuck around and find out" in slightly a bit more eloquent words. "...Fuck with that vampire and see what comes of it."
Ohhhh will he.
Later that night when Mr. Fenwick is ready to hit the hay when Louis ninja's his way in his home. Mr. Fenwick is stoic and puffs his chest in an attempt of buffonery of an alpha attempt by commenting that he hasn't accepted his place in the world. Louis just lets him banter and talking his shit...Louis. Oh, Louis.
He reads his mind and show's off by saying out loud exactly what he's thinking. My, how fortunate it is that his family ain't here, he says so tauntingly. Mr. Fenwick whips out his gun to shoot him but alas, didn't do shit. Now his heartbeat is racing even faster at this point so while he is attempting to reload, Louis rushes to him and does a few battle swipes at his face and body...
"You think I'm arrogant?! Maybe I am arrogant!"
Mr. Fenwick asks in a horrified manner who iz he? I'm Batman. Actually no. I'm a vampire. Yeah, he totally said that!!!!!
The next morning, a woman is shrieking her head off to find Mr. Fenwick's tattering and bloodied body on display.
This sends the whole town in an uproar and the city folk ends up throwing fire bombs at the Azalea. That sucks.
Lestat, in such elegant words told him that despite disapproving of what he did, hey he was impressed with the execution because it got his point across, didn't it?
Louis heads back out and holy fuck the city is being run amok. People setting other businesses on fire. Everyone is fighting with one another. He walks in the direction where everybody else is running from. He reaches one particular fire where he hears a faint cry from a young girl. He runs inside to follow that voice and risk his life to save that girl. That girl?
Claudia.
Episode 4 is next.
