Mariane: Episode 5
Now: Episode 5 "You Left Her"
She let her hands play in the hair of the tragic boy.She was not a little girl heart-broken about him;She was a grown woman smiling at it all, but they were wet-eyed smiles.-James Matthew Barrie
Drawn to the hole where Emma previously had hallucinations of, Marianne herself beckons her. Emma herself is in a room surrounded by child drawings descending from the ceiling. She answers a bang on the door in front of her which transports her into another room. A classroom where of all fonts and sizes is "You are punished" written on the chalkboard.
Emma walks over to the back of the classroom and sees a young girl hiding behind a door. As she walks over she asks if the little girl is Marianne. "Nah. I'm Emma." And then she chokes her!
Side it was all a dream.
Not from Emma this time but some other girl. The girl being choked is the one who woke up IRL. Weird, huh? Even worse, she woke up in a wet bed. Dat sucks. Okay so now that we are clear, this really is Emma as a teen.
In this flashback, Emma goes to launder her blankets and her mother makes small chit chat. And she meets back up with the shipwreck kids gang. Even Caro. They even have this Stranger Things esq 80s music. Heh. Emma wasn't kidding when she called asshole priest an asshole priest because he unleashed his dog on the group which forced they all to jump in the ocean.
During their hangout, Caroline asks Emma about her nightmares (which was briefly mentioned before the dog chased them) and she explains about someone being after her inhabiting people she loves to get at her. Caro suggests to summon Marianne but the whole group is hella skeptical but she says she gothic catholic girl *busts out Ouija board* so let's do this!
Punk rock Aurore and Emma are chilling at her house disagreeing with each other about the upcoming seance. Aurore doesn't believe in it but Emma does and wants to go through with it was basically their conversation. In walks Lucie whom is now revealed to be Aurore's younger sister who calls her big sis Nana. Go fig. Light nudging, she agrees to go with Emma.
In the darkness of night, the group meets up at their old school. They set up shop in a classroom. They immediately get down to business and sit on the ground while holding hands while Caroline starts chanting to summon her to speak to them. Emma then starts to hear Marianne but is shocked to notice the rest of the group didn't perceive it. As she looks around she hears footsteps and a door slowly opening.
Marianne possesses Emma and contorts her body then proceeds to lash out in anger. She starts with Caro first saying for the audacity for being a noob witch trying to bark orders at her will HANG for this and then makes her rounds prophesizing each and every one's curse bestowed on them. Holy shit most of them came true already as we've seen in the show. Then Emma goes limp.
Seance is officially over and Aurore reacts the strongest out of everyone (IMO she had the least daunting curse but then again she did spit in her face). She storms out of the school and freaks the fuck out to Emma convinced that it was Emma and there is no such thing as spirits, evil spirits and plain possession in general. She claims it was all just a fucked up game. No one in the group can calm her down and she's still fuming angry and continues to storm off.
Some time later, Emma waits for school to be let out and heads on to check on Lucie. She wants to take Lucie home via ferry. She totally sees right through that and knows it is an excuse so she can talk to her sister who already filled her in. So yeah, she does agree. Being a playful little girl, she snatches whatever Emma was holding and runs out of the room saying she'll have to catch her first. Unbeknownst to her, she decides to hop in the box freezer and the clasps shut.
As soon as Emma steps out, she thought she saw Lucie run into a separate classroom so she runs in there. She kept seeing an girl figure crawling on the floor only to find Lucie's toy animal. Meanwhile, yes, Lucie found herself stuck in the freezer desperately trying to get out. In the classroom, Emma was being distracted in just enough time with something being written on the chalkboard and when she finally gets the courage to look on the other side of the chalkboard is the image of Lucie curled up in a box. This is when she runs to the freezer and sees Lucie frozen to death.
Later that night while Emma is weeping in her bed, she could hear her parents talk about the unfortunate incident. The father (dat's Phillip) was outraged how there wasn't a teacher or some kind of authority figure watching over her. Meanwhile, Emma hears a drip. It is Lucie's stuffed animal that she threw into the ocean after Lucie's passing. It materialized on her shelf.
She's being tormented by visions of Lucie or some kind of figure underneath her bed sheets that inching closer and closer to her.
Emma decides to suck it up and head towards the church for confessional. Yes to asshole priest. He really has a huge chip on his shoulder because before she can say what she wanted to say he snaps at her. Well she proceeds to confess all her sins to priest even to include the seance she did with her friends.
He definitely doesn't sugar coat it and says she is a fuck up (paraphrase) and he totaly does acknowledge that yes there is evil and this spirit in particular attach itself to her. If this evil spirit says it will do (bad thing here) then you best believe it will come to fruition. Therefore, her best course of action is to leave Elden and all the evil associated to her will not come true. She will take that evil far and away.
Hold up though.
Emma is still a teen and no way will her parents just up and move, right? Priest then says that she has to "earn her exile"; she has to make her own plan to self destruct and fuck up SO BAD that everyone wants her gone. All her friends and family she loves so much she wants them to hate her to want nothing to do with her.
Cue the montage of teenage angst anthem.
Priest ends up calling the police and it's so funny because Emma trashes up the church and vandalizes the walls even beheaded the jesus statue. Broooooo. That's not all, this is what sparked the article she wrote for the LightHouse Press
"Our generation's curse is dictated by our elders. Mine is located in my mother's head. For her, the meaning of life resides in the absence of questioning. Here is the portatiot of an idiot who'd rather hide her idocy behind smiles and stuffed tomatoes."
This is what sparked her parents sending her off. The mother drops her off at the bus stop and while she clearly took the brunt of the hostility, she clearly loves her daughter and reached out despite the hurtful things said. Emma struggled to keep up her mean streak but ultimately doesn't reciprocate any affection and abruptly leaves her mother without as much as a bye.
Shortly after she boards the bus, Sebastien arrives behind her only to tell her that she knows this mean streak isn't her and she's just acting out after the incident. Emma doesn't waver one bit and just turns so standoffish. He said what he said so he takes his leave off the bus. She has a change of heart and jumps his bones for a send off. Yup.
Ever since that day, she started writing in what later become her series of bestselling novels. She invented Lizzie Larck as the protagonist to fight her.
Scene is now set to present day as Emma reveals his origin story to a brooding smoking Inspector Ronan. Now that he knows the whole story he asks "How do you kill something that is already dead?"
A knock at the door. Emma answers and it's a somber Sebastien who he first tells that he lost his baby. It's totally clean now, Inspector Ronan is now like "Yeah, we totally need to find a way to kill this bitch."
Episode 6 is next. 2 more episodes to go!
