Episode 1 "Long Day's Journey into Night"
In the middle of the day, a diner is closing. After all the patrons leave, a jukebox plays. 🎶The Animals "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place"🎶 Everybody is all walking down the street and this dude is waving his bell. The thing about this city, it looks very worn down. The roads don't even look paved.
Meanwhile, a guy and his dad were playing chess but dad is grumps but he obliges anyway. As he gets walked off the property by a woman named Kristi, he seems to have a little crush on her. Aww. Turns out this baby face is the town's deputy. His name is Kenny. He says bye to the ringer of bells, whom is Boyd, the town sheriff. He returns home as well. He seems to be really fixated on making sure people head on in doors.
Upon going inside the police station there is a sign that says Days Without Incident: 96.
A girl and her mother are waiting by the door for the male head of house, Frank, to come home. Both seem really concerned. Hmm, this is a little creepy. What is there, a boogie man out there or something? The girls says her bed time prayers but hears a knock at the window. A voice behind the door tells the little girl to go to the window. She is apparently not allowed to but she gets persuaded to anyway.
The brat opened the window and old creepy granny is MONSTAAAAAA and pounces on the 2. That literally gave me a jump I tell ya what.
That was the intro, bois. Enter the theme and I love it. It's the Pixies with a slow yet haunting cover of 🎵"Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)"🎵
Next scene is a family taking this road trip. The daughter and younger brother are playing with toys in the back of the trailer while the grown ups are in the front. The daughter has a morbid sense of humor and kills off lil bro's favorite character. Omg she's playing with finger puppets. Totes my childhood. He is obviously distressed but Julie is like "Nothing personal, kid." and goes off to listen to her music like your run of the mill angsty teenaged rebel.
Mother does damage control to stop him from whining in the most motherly way possible. She says "There's no such things as monsters, son." Ominous foreshadowing...heh.
Back in the torn down city, there is a crowd of people surrounding the recent house that got invaded by monster granny and Frank stumbles his way back to his house. Sheriff Boyd (the bell ringer) comes stomping out of the house and punches Frank in the face. Apparently this moron didn't nail the windows shut but he's a drunk ass dude that never made it home to do so and now sees the consequences. Boyd continues roughing him up but for good reason as he shows him the dead and mutilated corpses of his late wife and daughter. Holy shit, I was not prepared to see that! In further frustration, Sheriff Boyd tells the deputy Kenny to lock him up.
As Boyd heads on out, he sees a talisman on the floor. Looks ominous but yeah he picks it up and tucks it in his pocket for later.
As for the road tripping family, they are apparently on their way to see their folks. Along the way they approach a road blockage which is huge tree in the middle of the road that is definitely not a one or even two people job to move it. They figure this is a nice break from being on the road for as long as they have but enjoyment is quickly spoiled when they see an alarming amount of crows circling them overheaed. They get super freaked and get back in the RV.
Sheriff Boyd tries to visit his son but it is clear that they are estranged. His name is Ellis and was in the middle of drawing a young lady like the one of his french girls. He interrupts the party and the girl, Fatima, excuses herself. She seems to be more fond of Boyd than Ellis. I'm sure we'll figure out why eventually.
He tells Ellis about the casualities last night and he implores him to pay his respects to the mother and daughter for the upcoming service. Ellis keeps stonewalling his dad so he takes the hint and takes his leave.
RV family is frustrated that they lost track of route so they turn back but they quickly find out with a little detour but now they think they are fizzucked. That is, until the reach this FORBIDDEN TOWN.
A little too soon for the burial but yeah there is a group of people at the burial and this was the weird timing this RV family has. They stop and park like right in front of the ceremony. Ethan, the son, asks why they are looking at them? Well...I don't know kid maybe because YOUR FAM CRASHED THE SERVICE!
The father steps out of the RV to approach the group to try to ask for help while the rest of the family just observes from afar. The father introduces himself as Jim and gets directions to get back to the highway. All Boyd says is to keep going down the road and they'll find it. As Jim walks away Boyd has this look of dread and sadness for he knows exactly what's going to happen to them once they get back on the road. So off the RV family go but the towns people just stare at them like a creepy horror movie in unison.
They get back on the road and the sister scares the crap out of her brother but that's just normal sibling banter but it starts to frustrate Jim so he tells her to quit her shit. His wife, Tabitha, makes a confusing discovery that despite them just going on a straight road away from the town, the next town over looks like the EXACT. SAME. TOWN. Well...because it is!
Creepy, you say?! Why yes, Tabitha.
Jim tries to ask this random young girl walking along the road how to get back to the highway but she dead ass ignores him and keeps walking. Weirded out by her reaction, they decide to just keeping driving. And what do you know? To their horror, they looped back at same town no matter how many times they keep trying to get away!! WTF is this shit?!
Boyd and Kenny realize they are finally ready to know the truth and roll out the spike strips on the road.
Their plan ends up not coming out as planned. As a pure coincidence another car appears on the opposite side and runs RV family off the road. All are okay but bruised up. Well except for little Ethan. Lil man got impaled through his leg.
Boyd catches up to the car wreck where the passenger of the other car stumbles out but he looks under the influence or some shit so Boyd ends up cuffing him to the car to deal with later. He reaches the family to help them all out. Kristi, the nurse from the home Kenny's father is at, sneaks a peek to the other high AF passenger but quickly goes to tend to Ethan.
What sucks here is that there's less than an hour of daylight left and as if you don't know already, when the lights go down *whisper voice* YOU GO DOWN. Boyd comes up with the idea that since they are in the RV that using the talisman he had in his pocket in the recently deceased house asking Kristie with that, can she NOW do it? She reluctantly agrees. Don't worry, you'll find out more about this talisman later.
The driver of the car has now been transported to the hospital now and the creepy ignoring girl from earlier comes up to him and stabs him in the neck!! Bruhhhhhh.
Tabitha and her daughter, Julie, are riding with Kenny and a few others in another car to head back to town. As the sun is starting to set back they are urging them to hurry TF up to head to safety. Looks like Jim is staying behind in the RV to be of extra help while Kristi assists in removing the rod in the little kid, Ethan.
On their way back Kenny hits the very same spike strip that he put out intended for the RV fam. Dumbass forgot to put that shit away. They are just minutes away from night fall so they have to scramble for another plan.
Deputy Kenny rushes Tabitha and Julie out of the truck and tells them to run as fast they they can to the nearest house like STAT! Colony House in particular. Oh boy.
Meanwhile back at the RV, Jim gets suspicious when he sees Boyd covering up all the windows and placing the talisman on a wall. Boyd says he is doing so to keep them safe but Jim replies back "Heeeeey, what do you mean by that exactly?" Before Boyd can answer, he takes a quick peak out the window and says:
"They''re already here."
