Hellbound S1E1
This episode opens up in a coffee shop on a seemingly normal day with everyone chatting and shit. That is, until we see this one man who is looking disheveled and quivering with fear staring intently at his phone. The second is turned 1:20pm he let out a sigh of relief. However that is short lived as just as quickly, he hears an ominious stomp from a distance. He automatically knows his fate.
The next scene we are greeted with detective Kyunghun and other fellow police officers and detecives having a case briefing on these fresh events. These creatures appeared out of nowhere and just as quickly disappeared. Working on dem suspects. Victim had no wife and no kids. But his corpse was hella burnt to a crisp. Despite there being multiple witnesses along with viral video clips of these shadow beings, no physical evidence of them were found at all at the scene so they are confuzzled as heck. Kyunghun is just lollygagging on his phone and comes across this new spiritual movement called The New Truth. His superior has him to team up with Eunpyo to find out more about this New Truth as they think it may be key to the case.
The new Truth is an organization for religious studies formed by chairmen Jung Jinsu in 2012. It is assumed that it's radical members formed The Arrowhead whom are vigilantes.
Shortly afterwards they catch up to Jung and introduce themselves but before they can really get a feel, Kyunghun notices his teenaged daughter working for said group as a volunteer. After a brief but stern talking to the girl she abruptly leaves and pappy almost angrily confronts Chairman Jung but he calmly deescalates the situation by assuring him that since he doesn't approve, he will no longer have her volunteer. Satisfied with the response, he drops it and resumes the questioning of his movement.
He claims he is on his way to a meeting but is more than happy to answer any questions en route. For some reason, he doesn't have a ride but just hops on the subway much to the civilians' star struck delight. See? He's not like a regular cult leader, he's a cool cult leader.
However, things get pretty deep when Jung reveals that what began his whole journey was on one fateful day he traveled to Tibet intending to commit suicide. He instead had a religious awakening when he is a witness to a man being slaughtered by these supernatural shadowy beings. Feeling a calling to God since Jung has now devoted his life to spreading the word of his interpretation of why these beings are being summoned on particular people, his movement quickly gained traction to what it is today. Unfortunately, he admits that a certain group of people that would later form The Arrowhead have grossly misinterpreted his messages and have gone to do terrible things and he disowns them.
The detective is kinda skeptical because there is no known causes to it and this dude is just fear mongering people to keep their morals in line. Is that immoral in itself? Sure but according to this dude, it's the results that matter. In his case, the ends justify the means.
He also lets out that he knows that his wife was murdered. How would he feel knowing that the man responsible for her death is now a free man without any consequences in the eyes of God? Damn, yo. He's trying the ol' fashioned emotional manipulation tactic! In a way, it works because the detective is somber being reminded.
Meanwhile, a mother comes home from work much to the surprise of her kids that surprised her with a birthday cake. Her older kid has a phone and recording them singing Happy Birthday to her! Such a cute scene, huh? That is, unexpectedly, something terrible happens. A face of smoke materializes on their ceiling prophesizing that this very mother is sentenced to be dragged to hell in 5 days. Bummer.
Detectives come across this one wacky ass video a representative of The Arrowhead talking about another man saying he deserves to be punished due to his blasphemy as an outspoken critic of The New Truth. A man is next seen being recorded stripped down to his undergarments and tied to a chair as a group of people beat him to death. Almost.
This dude does end up surviving and he's being questioning the police asking WTF is going to happen now? Unfortunately these fuckers are minors so not much can be done to give them the punishment they deserve for beating him to the brink of death. They're not cooperating either but go figure.
The mother from just moments before goes to a local law office (whom is representing the beaten man) what happened to her being sentenced to die and all. She shows them the recording her child recorded and she's freaking the fuck out! She did mention that the organization did contact her though. The creepy part is that because this is such uncharted territory, they literally want to broadcast this woman's moment of being dragged to hell.
As if you weren't surprised, this oh so uplifting street preacher guy has a devilish look on his face.
Dun. Dun. DUNNNNNN!
Talk about cliff hanger.
