Diablero S1E2

EPISODE TWO:  "Leg of a Dog, Heart of a Chicken/Pata de perro, corazón de pollo"

The episode opens up in the not so distant past when Elvis first comes into contact with a much younger version of Nancy. She was a little girl whom was reading from a book to invoke a protector (AKA demon) while a male figure is heard banging on her locked door trying to break it down. Nancy's invokation?

""Holy Death, mighty and strong,
Indispensable at times of danger
I name you my defender
I invoke you,
Certain of your kindness and glory
Holy Death, help me put my enemy to death
Death to my enemy
Death to my enemy
Death to my enemy"

Rawr.

Elvis and his sister, Keta, arrive to the house where Nancy's mother says police, priests nor anyone else is willing to help her which is why she turned to him. And Elvis gets a good look for the first time.

Back in the present. The whole gang heads to Lucía's home to see if they can find any traces of the demon who abducted Mariana, which is the now grown up Nancy's specialty. Nancy and Father Ramiro are in Lucía's room. He takes a picture of Mariana in his pocket where Nancy asks why he abandoned her. She was not in the know so of course he had to briefly explain yet again that he never knew of her existence this whole time.

Elvis decides that they need to consult with El Indio for some more intel on this Type 2 demon they are dealing with. Who's El Indio? He's a fellow Diablero. Take "fellow" with a grain of salt.

Before they can take off, they hear a phone ring. It's Mariana. She found her phone and tried to call but her mother's phone but has so much water damage the call was dropped.

Meanwhile, Keta tries to find Lucía's body for more clues but at the hospital, not a trace of her is found? Like wut. No paper trails but she did find a pic of the scar she was branded with.

Elvis, Nancy and Ramiro find their way to this underground club of sorts. It's lit. Not really. Nancy explains to Ramiro that over there where there's some cage fighting is actually people under the influence of demons that fight each other much to the entertainment of the spectators where they place bets. We can now see why Elvis doesn't like Indio much. He ain't into the exploitation life, ya know?

If you haven't connected the dots already, the demon souls that Elvis owes Indio is so that it fuels these fights. There is some kind of stockpile and a human has to inject via a face mask before entering the cage. But hey, let's get to the grand meeting with this mobster-esqe Diablero.

As expected, they are greeted with a lovely welcome.

Before shit hits the fan, Nancy proposes a bet. That she is willing to fight in the cage and if she wins, not only will he forgive Elvis' debt but help them in where the demon is. If she loses? He will never leave.

Ooh wee!

Before the fight was to begin, Father Ramiro gets kicked out since he was talking shit. Sucks, dawg.

Meanwhile Nancy kicks some ass.

Father Ramiro decides he needs to get into even more shit so he tries to find another way to infiltrate1. He follows the cries of a young child in this separate area connected to the arena. With the security guard asleep, he just tip toes past him and to his horror his sees a CRYING CHILD locked in a cage and he's like "Holy shit, I'll help you mija!" He finds the keys and asks her "You're Mariana, right?" OMG this just seems a little too easy right? Turns out, as soon as he steps inside, he quickly realizes it's a motherfucking cage full of demons. He Benny Hill's the fuck out of there.

A flashback is shown the bond between Nancy and Elvis. So after the events in the beginning of the episode, her mother commits her for the mentally insane. She makes an incredible escape and finds him and asks for help how to tame these demons that are now bound to her. It's a sweet scene that when Cage Nancy is about to lose the fight, Elvis is right there to give her a mandatory monologue to pump her the fuck up again and triumph. The execution of this scene is way better than me explaining it.

Back to the fight. Nancy won because well, plot points, so Elvis immediately demands Indio's help like RIGHT MEOW. But this mothafucka tries to weasel his way out of it claiming that since Nancy invoked her own demon rather than using their stockpile, the win is null and void. More smack talking back and forth but uh...

Good timing?

This is when Ramiro comes running into the arena like "HALP!" along with the demons zombies or whatever the fuck come rolling out behind him. They start slaughtering the spectators From Dusk Til Dawn style. Elvis takes this as a cue that maybe they should leave right about now. Skadoosh!

He is able to retrieve his beloved precious car that he dubs Hound and they escape into the night.

So, what exactly did they accomplish tonight? Well, they do know that the demon that took Mariana came from the arena al nd that if Indio ever gets his hands on him, things will not be pretty. Heh. Sucks that he couldn't get Indio's help but of course it was always that shot in the dark that he would've helped anyway. At least he got his Hound back so all is now right with the world.

They meet back up with Keta who finally was able to track down Lucia's body in the morgue. However, once Father Ramiro sees for himself, he says that this is the wrong body. THIS IS NOT THE LUCIA HE BANGED!

Another dilemma is that we learn that this mark is apparently on numerous other bodies which Keta purposely hid from Elvis. This mark bears a significance bringing out a new character or at least at the timing of this episode a person very near and dear to them they somehow lost.

In the final scene, Mariana is finally able to escape the rat infested sewers and tries to out run the demon chasing her in the woods. An older woman comes to her rescues and tries to aid their escape before the demon finds them. Away they go.
