Diablero S1E1
Episode 1: "The Demons Are Among Us/Los demonios están entre nosotros"
This episode opens up with a mother tucking her daughter, Mariana, in bed. Almost immediately she senses an intruder and gets attacked by this grotesque humanoid demon. He ends up throwing her off the balcony and brands her. Crying in agony she helplessly sees this demon abduct her daughter.
Lucía, the woman in critical condition, requests this priest named Ramiro Ventura to her bed side. She drops the bomb that Mariana is his daughter and he must find her! Ooh the plot thickens!!! She ends up succombing to her injuries right in front of his eyes. One of the nurses saw the brand on Lucía. Realizing who may be responsible for her death, she immediately stops him and says she can help. Her brother is a diablero and can find his daughter from a conversation she totally eavesdropped on. Who is this demon hunter you speak of? Well...
After a little bit of solicitation from the sister, Keta, his interest is piqued and seeks of this Father Ramiro Ventura.
Ramiro is definitely an interesting character. Gathering some Intel barely 20 minutes into this episode you can piece together that he "once had a life before this" including his tryst with Lucía among his growing doubts as a priest. He attempts to seek help the way he was conditioned to as a regular ass human. Police? They don't give a hoot. His church superior dude (idk the title) he also gives fuck all about it. No one wants to help!! Like WTF. Ramiro ends up having a mental breakdown in the middle of a sermon where he tells his followers his contempt for God. Saying demons walk among us while God doesn't care to protect us. And that if we don't do something about this then we are all FUCKED. Yes, he actually said that!!!!! Everyone swiftly left the church and there he is alone again. It is then after hitting rock bottom when he realizes he in fact does need this demon hunter's help. Whipping out the business card, he dials him up.
Lo and behold, this sneaky fucker was in attendance this whole time just out of view. Gave him kudos for his way of words.
They come to an agreement for a price. Off they go as Father Ramiro tags along with him to travel to the dark underbelly of the thriving city life.
CHARACTER ALERT!!
We meet some new cats, I mean, characters. They go to this demon appraiser in Korea Town. Elvis is warmly greeted by the equally foul mouthed Son Hee and the mild mannered Song. They both have a very interesting dynamic. With everyone, really. So Song take this demon in the bottle that the demon hunter captured earlier in the episode (he has a nice side somewhere down there and captured this demon at no charge to the wife) and tests this on a very unconvincing dead rat sprawled out on a dissecting table. The dead rat becomes freakishly possessed but somehow Song is able to categorize this demon based on the level of possession. He immediately sends them on their way.
Father Ramiro freaks the fuck out. He's still in this existential crisis on how God can allow such things to walk the earth after what he witnessed. Elvis then gives him am interestimg perspective.
"First off, I am not even sure if this guy does exist. Maybe he did once, but your church got it all twisted. If God does exist, he doesn't give a fuck about us." Wise words.
Not too long after leaving the Korean market, they get accosted by his family. Hella funny because these younger women approach him with all smiles "Uncle! Uncle" greeting him with a kick and punch to the stomach. Yeah, their his nieces but also work for their father whom Elvis owes demon souls too. Apparently demon souls are a form of currency or drug? I'll definitely have to keep watching to get the full scope of this concept. Anyway, he goes the big dog a heafty sum. The girls go through his bag and find the demon appraisal which turns out to be worth of a low caliber demon. No bueno. After a some more tough love they go back from where they came. But not without a stern warning once more of where he owes them debts. It is not entirely known yet if the big dog here is his brother or brother in law that he owes the demon souls too. Another thing for me to figure out as I keep watching.
Next, Elvis tells Father that he still needs to finish assembling his team. Including Nancy. Who's Nancy?
That's Nancy.
She has these special abilities. They apparently need her to track down the demon. All four (the sis included) finally make their way home and after one long ass day, they sit down to eat. For who knows who long when they will have another relaxing atmosphere from this day forward.
The final scene is when you see Mariana in this dimly lit cave calling for help. She tries to climb out but the demon monster looking mofo scares her back down. Well, dear.
🎵Amada Mia🎵 is the song played during Nancy's mental hospital scene. Just a fun little fact since it was not in the credits from what I can see.
Episode 2 is next.
